Things to Consider when keeping Chickens in your backyard in Sydney.
The Size of Your Yard
Some of the inner city homes and properties have smaller yards, so it’s important to make sure your yard will accommodate the chicken coop with still enough room in the yard to let them reign freely.
Chickens need to be let out regularly so it’s important to take this into consideration when planning out your yard and where to put your chook house.
The dimensions for each of our coops are clearly labelled in the product description, so taking into account the size of the coop, plus you’ll need to allow approximately 2 – 3 square metres per chook and that should be enough room.
Having enough room for your chooks to run around freely is important, skimping on space can cause your chooks to stress, they don’t like being on top of each other and it can lead to pecking, cannibalism, and sometimes even death.
Local Councils
You’ll need to check the local council regulations to see if there are any restrictions pertaining to the keeping of chooks.
It’s not unusual for some of the Sydney City Council to stipulate the number of chooks you can keep, as well as the type (no roosters) of chook, mainly hens, and the distance from the neighbour’s property that you can place your chook coop.
Some councils will have the information available on the website, some councils even run workshops to help you understand how both the chickens and your neighbours can live in harmony.

The weather in Sydney can be extreme at times, and it’s not uncommon for the temperatures to rise above 40 degrees in the summer months, and in the Winter months the temperature drops considerably.
