HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE DOG KENNEL?

At Somerzby we know how important your dog is to you. We also know the value of the Somerzby reputation for quality products.

It’s important to choose the right size dog kennel for your dog for a number of reasons.
If the Kennel is too big your dog may:
  • Find it hard to keep warm in the colder months because there is too much space for its body heat to warm up
  • Not feel so secure — dogs like to feel enclosed in their secure little den
  • Start to use the extra space as a toilet
If the kennel is too small your dog may:
  • Be uncomfortable and stressed
  • Develop destructive behaviors and attempt to escape
  • Get too hot in the summer months

HOW BIG IS YOUR DOG?

It might be an obvious question but you need to take into account not only how big your dog is now but how large it will become as a fully-grown adult.
In general terms, your dog should be able to sit up, lie down with paws outstretched, and turn around comfortably without touching the sides of the kennel.

Remember that male and female dogs may differ in size and cross-breeding may also influence size.

Please measure your pet and add 5 to 10cms to both the length (when standing) and the height (sitting) of your dog.

Do this before purchasing a kennel as the following is a guide ONLY.

IS YOUR DOG AN ADULT OR A PUPPY?

If your dog is well toilet trained you can choose a more spacious kennel that allows your dog to move around more.

This is especially true if you expect your dog to spend a lot of time outdoors and in its kennel.

If your dog is still in the toilet training phase and you have chosen a kennel to suit its eventual adult size then you should consider reducing the internal size of the kennel with wooden dividers or extra padding.

This will reduce the likelihood of toileting accidents and will help keep your puppy warmer and more comfortable in the colder months.

Give your favourite Fido the security and protection of a superior crafted Somerzby wooden dog kennel.
